Due in the first quarter of 2019, the new BMW 8 Series revives the moniker first seen in 1989. Back then the 8 Series was the first road car to feature a V12 engine in conjunction with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
30 years later BMW South Africa has announced the 8 Series will be launched in early 2019. This time there's no V12 but powering the large coupe is a completely redeveloped V8 engine. It uses four-wheel drive technology, an active rear axle differential lock, adaptive M suspension Professional with active roll stabilisation and Integral Active Steering.
The eight-cylinder power unit, whist having the same weight as its predecessor engine, improves power by 50kW to 390kW. Maximum torque has increased by 100Nm to 750Nm and is available from 1800rpm. And yes, BMW will build an M8.
The local BMW website quotes the M850i xDrive Coupe at a price of R1 887 827.
