Suzuki has given its Swift a significant facelift in the United Kingdom and Ireland ahead of the 2021 model year.

One of the biggest changes takes place under the bonnet. The car still employs a 1.2-litre petrol engine, but a 12V hybrid system enhances it. A 48V hybrid system has also bolstered the Swift Sport's turbocharged 1.4-litre engine.

In all, the revised powertrains bring about improved performance and better fuel consumption.

4WD? On a Swift?

The new Swift range comprises several grades, named SZ-L, SZ-T, SZ5 and SZ5 AllGrip grades. The AllGrip system is available optionally and is only available with the manual gearbox option.

Suzuki UK says this model is ideally suited to those living in rural areas but who do not require an SUV.

Suzuki's CVT (continuously variable transmission) is optionally available on the SZ-T and the front-wheel-drive SZ5 and offers seven-step gear programs. Paddles on the steering column give drivers the option to change gears manually.

Suzuki South Africa commented: "At this stage, we will not get the hybrid or AllGrip models due to the extra cost. The hybrid model is also slower than the current model.

"In reference to Swift or Ignis fitted with the AllGrip system: No, we won't receive it due to the fact that these models are made in Japan and are at a much higher spec level. This, in turn, increases the cost drastically for the South African consumer in the end."
