It seems I've become the go-to journalist when members of the public spot foreign vehicles testing in South Africa.

On this occasion I was alerted about a new German sedan or SUV, rather it was a brand new car company called VinFast that's in South Africa conducting testing of its vehicle, the Lux SA2.0.

It's reportedly based on the F15 BMW X5 and made its world debut at the 2018 Paris motor show. Assembly at the Haiphong plant began in 2019 and 4.9 metre long SUV uses a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine or a 6.2-litre V8 engine sourced from General Motors.

It looks great in the metal, mostly because famous Italian design house Pininfarina designed the car.

The model spotted by locals is the 2.0-litre derivative. It was spotted in Kakamas in the Northern Cape by reader Simon Smeeding and also seen in the Cape Town CBD.

Vehicle manufacturers usually conduct hot-weather testing in the Northern Cape, where temperatures can reach more than 40 degrees Celsius.

If you spot any strange looking vehicles dressed in camouflage, send us a mail with photographs and where they were spotted.
