SEE | V-Class, Kombi, Grand Sedona: We list the 5 fastest vans in SA

accreditation

• V-Class fastest van/MPV in SA.

• V-Class has 206km/h top speed.

• Hyundai H-1 most affordable in our list.

Often when we're referring to 'the fastest vehicles', we don't necessarily include vans or multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) in that equation. And rightly so, because a van is a van. They are people carriers, not sprinters - no pun intended, Mercedes.

Yet, there are MPVs in our market that can get the hurry-on when you mash the throttle. And while the sprint times and top speeds won't set anything alight, it's good to know that these formidable people carriers can get a move on when required.

Topping our list below is the Mercedes-Benz V-Class. With a 0-100km/h time of 9.6 seconds and a 206km/h top speed, it is quite a runner. However, it is also the most expensive with a starting price of almost R920 000.

Wheels24's Janine Van der Post says: "I am a sucker for MPVs, like a child in a candy shop or in a toy shop at Christmas. Having these five people-movers in front of me would be like hitting the jackpot. I wouldn't be able to choose as I love all of them.

"I have driven each vehicle and each has it's strong points, especially in terms of comfort, frugality, and never-ending space. Also, they all have sliding rear doors. But if I had to, my pick of the bunch would be the Korean offerings. The Kia Grand Sedona has always been one of my top favourite vehicles, and the Hyundai H1 is the most practical with loads of seats and a ridiculously vast cargo area.

"The Ford Tourneo Custom feels the most as if you're driving a smaller sedan offering, yet it's nippy and most comfortable. The Mercedes V-Class and VW Kombi are the more premium offerings, while the latter is my five-year-old daughter's absolute favourite vehicle thanks to its versatility.

Do note: Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Ford have more than one van/MPV in their arsenal. The inclusions of the models we chose were based on the number of seats, pricing, and their orientation towards families.
