SEE | Three direct rivals to Honda's top-of-the-range HR-V, based on price

Following our review of the Honda HR-V 1.8 Elegance, which crossovers does this model come up against?

While looking through the list of contenders, the HR-V 1.8 has quite a few rivals to fend off. These rivals, all ranging from different manufacturers with different size engines, each come with their own set of traits and features. It’s not to say that they are better than the HR-V, but they are all competing for the same piece of pie.

To tighten the list of contenders to the HR-V, we looked at vehicles within the same price range. These rivals are not fitted with a similarly sized engine, but given the price, you are more than likely to consider at least one of them. The HR-V 1.8 retails for R445 700.

In our HR-V review we noted: “While we enjoyed it for the most part, some aspects of the vehicle did not really stir the senses. Still, it remains a very pleasant vehicle that sees to Honda’s ethos of producing solid vehicles renowned for their sound build-quality.”

Opel GrandLand X 1.6T – R442 00

The 1.6T is the entry-level model to the GrandLand X range. Not only does it best the HR-V on price, but its turbocharged 1.6-litre engine produces more power, too (121kW/240Nm vs. 105kW/172Nm). The Opel also has a bigger boot - 514L vs. 393L – without limiting interior space. Granted, the GrandLand X is considered an SUV, and not a crossover like the HR-V.

Opel says that the engine in this SUV will sip an average of 7.0-litres/100km.

A total of six airbags form part of the GrandLand X’s arsenal, as well as park distance control both front and rear, and electric folding side mirrors.

The GrandLand X 1.6T has a maintenance plan for five-years/150 000km, a five-year/100 000km service plan, and, optionally available, a five-year/100 000km maintenance plan.

Kia Seltos 1.4T-GDI GT Line – R444 995

The 1.4T GT Line is the top-of-the-range model in the Seltos range and comes fitted with quite an extensive list of standard features. These include front and rear USB ports, keyless access, auto on/off lights, and a reversing camera with park distance control.

At 103kW, the 1.4-litre turbocharged engine produces slightly less power than the HR-V, but it has more torque: 242Nm. Thanks to the seven-speed automatic gearbox, fuel consumption is rated at 6.3-litres/100km.

The Seltos does not offer a maintenance plan, but it has a five-year/unlimited km warranty, as well as a five-year/90 000km service plan.

Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.0 AWD – R449 995

While the vehicles in this list, including the HR-V, are front-wheel drive, the Eclipse is available in all-wheel drive configuration. There is a second, more affordable, front-wheel drive model in the Eclipse range, but it does not rival the HR-V on price.

This model, however, sits atop the two-model range and is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre engine. The motor produces 110kW and 198Nm, and is fitted with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), like the HR-V. Mitsubishi claims a fuel return of 8.1-litres/100km/h.

Among its features, the Eclipse AWD is fitted with leather-covered seats, and heated front seats.

A three-year/100 000km warranty comes standard, as well as a five-year/90 000km service plan.
