Small city cars are very popular in South Africa.
They are among the strongest selling segments in our carpool and offer new buyers the opportunity to get that new car without breaking the bank.
While these cars are affordable, they are also among the lightest.
The light bunch
The Renault Kwid is the lightest car in South Africa, topping the scales at 736kg. This is extremely light for any vehicle, but it does have a benefit when it comes to fuel consumption.
The newest addition to this segment is Suzuki's S-Presso. Launched just ahead of lockdown, the S-Presso came to market as an affordable alternative in an already affordable segment. However, it does so without foregoing any of the niceties you'd expect for a car in this segment.

Other cars that made the list of the lightest cars on sale include the Datsun Go! and two Hyundai's: the Grandi10 and Atos. The Atos returned to South Africa following a lengthy absence from the market. As an affordable entry to Hyundai's product range, the Atos impresses with its solid package and sub-900kg weight.
At 866kg it is considerably lighter than the Grandi10 (912kg), as well as slightly more affordable.
