SA-bound: This is the all-new 180kW Volkswagen Golf GTI

Local fans of the Golf GTI nameplate will be pleasantly surprised at the 11kW increase the latest model has over its predecessor.

In eight-generation form, the popular Volkswagen performance hatch produces 180kW and 370Nm from a 2.0-litre turbocharged injection engine.

In Europe, a 6-speed manual gearbox is standard; however, local specification is almost certainly to use the new 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox DSG. The 'box is a new shift-by-wire system, for faster shifts says the carmaker.

The GTi is available as standard with 17-inch wheels, 18 and 19-inch examples are optional. Again, we'll only know which specification will be offered locally closer to its launch later this year.

The traditional honeycomb grille characterises the front of the car, and a horizontal LED light strip that spans the width of the front of the vehicle.  A diffuser with tailpipes on the left and right is standard fare at the rear.

Inside, there's a new multi-function leather sports steering wheel with touch controls, perforated leather and GTI clasp in chrome/red.

There's the digital cockpit infotainment system a 30-colour background lighting including GTI-specific mode.
