• The swansong of the seventh generation Golf GTI is here

• The TCR version of the famous hot hatch draws inspiration from the brand's Touring Car Series

• Volkswagen South African announced via social media that 85% of the 300 models have been sold

The seventh generation Volkswagen Golf GTI reaches the end of its life in South Africa with the TCR model. The motorsport-derived model is in South Africa according to the manufacturer and a delay due to the effect of the coronavirus.

Only 300 models will be available and Volkswagen says 85% of the allocation has been snapped up. This leaves 45 models for potential GTI fan boys and girls to snap up.

It could also tempt speculators who think its value might increase in the future. Speaking of price, the TCR retails for R669 000.

The TCR is likely to be the final hurrah for the Golf 7 GTi, the EA888 engine produces 213kW and 370Nm, 44kW and 20Nm than the normal model.

VW claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.6 seconds, and says its the fastest Golf GTi ever. It uses a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox and only the five-door model will be made available locally.

The GTI TCR was derived from the racing car of the same name – the two-time overall winner of the international TCR racing series. The TCR benefits from a black front splitter, black 18-inch wheels, a roof spoiler and black side mirrors. There are also TCR decals on the rear doors.

Inside, things feel more special with Alcantara inserts located on the door inserts and gear lever.

There are special seats for the TCR, Alcantara is found on the pews too and finished off with the letters 'TCR' embroidered onto the sports seats.

If you are lucky enough to own one, you'll be able to pick a TCR out by its colour. There are only three hues available, namely Pure White, Tornado Red, and Pure Grey.

Standard specification is high, with a panoramic sunroof, dynamic chassis control, park assist and active info display all standard.

Personally, I've loved a GTI in Tornado Red since the MkV iteration and if I had to choose a colour for the TCR it would easily be the crimson hue.

Mercifully, Volkswagen has made three models available for media so Wheels24 will get a go in one when the vehicles arrive later in September.

The GTI TCR comes standard with a three-year or 120 000km warranty, five-year or 90 000km service plan, and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. Service interval is 15 000km.
