Next-gen Smart ForTwo, ForFour in SA: Prices, details

Cape Town – The third-generation Smart ForTwo and ForFour has arrived in South Africa.

The new Smart cars are powered by a 999cc three-cylinder engine, available in two outputs, and three specifications - Passion, Prime and Proxy.

Wheels24's Charlen Raymond is attending the launch in Cape Town. Lookout for his driving impressions later this week.

New design

The new cars are completely redesigned with new features throughout and upgraded technology. Many design features such as the headlights, air vents and the iconic traditional safety cell are identical for both cars.

The new Smart ForFour, as its names suggest, has four seats and as many doors. The larger Smart car has greater loading capacity than its two-door sibling. The rear seat backrests can be folded down to produce a level load surface measuring 1285 x 996 mm with a claimed cargo volume of up to 975 litres.

‘Our idea has won through’

Annette Winkler, head of Smart, said: "As Europe's youngest car brand, smart enjoys global success today. No-one combines functionality and emotionality as well as we do, as the inventors of individual urban mobility. The new smart ForTwo and ForFour adopt the proven concept while offering more of just about everything – more space, more colour, more equipment … and even more fun in the city! Only the vehicle length of 2.69m remains as short as ever. Our idea based on a total rethink of urban mobility has won through. "which open to an angle of almost 90°.

Engine choices

Powering both cars is a three-cylinder 999c petrol unit with two outputs: a 52kW/91Nm version mated to a five-speed manual (for both ForTwo and ForFour) while the top-of-the-range Smart ForFour uses a 66kW unit engine coupled with a six-speed dual clutch auto with stop/start.

Entry-level Passion derivatives are equipped with LEDs, central-locking with radio remote control, visual locking-verification signal and immobiliser, cruise control with limiter (variable speed limitation), exterior temperature indicator with frost warning, electronic stability control with crosswind stabilisation, active belt tensioners at the rear of the ForFour and power windows (front).

Higher-specced versions are equipped with a leather multifunction steering wheel, 9cm TFT colour display and heated seats.

The multimedia systems meet the highest standards, with comprehensive smartphone integration, real-time navigation and intuitive operation with touchscreen.
