Mitsubishi has added a new model to its Eclipse Cross range, approximately one year after it launched the SUV locally.

The latest derivative is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 110kW and 250Nm. The four-cylinder unit is mated to an 'eight-speed' CVT (continuously-variable transmission). It also slots neatly to the top of the hierarchy, costing R459 995.

The Japanese firm quotes a 0-100km/h sprint time of under 9 seconds. It even has paddle-shifts fitted behind the steering wheel to change gears.

The forced-induction model uses a two-wheel drive system, like the entry-level 2.0-litre model. The 1.5-litre model also adds two new hues: blue and silky white.

Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors SA says: "The new blue and silky white colours we are introducing, are based on customer research. The Eclipse Cross is produced at the Mizushima Plant in Japan and is such a popular design that globally it is selling up a storm."

Some notable equipment features include a full-size spare wheel (alloy) and a heads-up display (HUD) which provides important vehicle information to the driver without having to look down. The HUD is available on all models. LED headlights are standard on the 1.5-litre model.
