Thousands of students will be waiting with bated breath on their matric results, while others will be hoping they’ve done enough to secure admission to their university of choice.
If you are one of the lucky ones to gain acceptance to university, you’ll be needing a set of wheels to get you to uni and back home again. Unfortunately, sometimes the car we want is just a bit out of reach financially.
Luckily, we at Wheels24 understand the need to have your own ride. That’s why we came up with a few options for you (and your parents) to look at.
Our criteria was simple: it has to be a hatchback with a starting price of under R200 000. If the range had more than one model, the most expensive one should not exceed R200k, either.
Furthermore, you’d find that all of the cars in our list is fitted with air conditioning, power steering, and a sound system that can play your music either via Bluetooth or an AUX connection.

Renault Kwid: R144 900 - R154 900
The Kwid has been available locally since 2016, but towards the latter stages of 2019 it received some major updates. The biggest changes have been brought on with the design and does the car now feature a very prominent new face.
Part of the upgrade include daytime-running LED headlights, two airbags and, and front electric windows. It still rides on 14-inch wheels. The 1.0-litre engine has been carried over from the previous generation and still produces 50kW and 91Nm. The three-cylinder engine, according to Renault, implements Formula 1 technology and uses as little as 4.1-litres/100km.
The Kwid range uses a manual and automatic gearbox - both with five gears.
The Kwid comes with a five-year or 150 000km warranty.

Datsun Go: R159 100 - R184 200
Like the Kwid, the Go also saw a raft of revisions being brought on. The biggest of these is the addition of a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) gearbox. The 1.2-litre engine in the Go does not have more power than the Kwid, but it boasts with a torque figure of 104Nm.
The Go tips the scales at a ridiculously low 779kg and offers up to 265L of boot space. Thanks to the updates, users can connect their mobile devices much quicker to the media system.
The Go comes standard with a six-year or 150 000km warranty, but a service- or maintenance plan is optionally available.

Hyundai Atos - R159 900
Following an absence of more than a decade, the Hyundai Atos returned to local shores in 2019. Like the next vehicle in our list, the Atos range also consist out of only one model, the 1.1 Motion.
The Atos implements a 1.1-litre petrol engine that produces 50kW and 99Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. Hyundai claims that the Atos will sip 5.7-litres of fuel for every 100km traveled, which should see owners cover more than 600km when the 35L fuel tank is filled to the brim.
The Atos comes standard with Hyundai’s seven-year/200 000km drivetrain warranty, as well as a five-year/150 000 vehicle warranty. A one-year/15 000 service plan also comes as standard - in other words, only one service is covered.

Peugeot 108 - R179 900
The 108 was introduced in South Africa when Peugeot rebranded itself in September 2019. The one-model range consist out of only the 1.0 Active model that has quite a bit of features added to the package. Among these are daytime-running LEDs, a multi-function steering wheel, front electric windows, and a whopping six airbags.
The three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine is mated with a five-speed manual gearbox and produces 53kW and 93Nm.
The 108 comes standard with a five-year/100 000km warranty, as well as a service plan of the same duration.
