Maserati lifted the veil on two new sedans under its revitalised Trofeo emblem.

The Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans will see a Trofeo model headlining each line-up, bringing the total number of Trofeo models to three. Earlier this year, Maserati debuted its Levante Trofeo in South Africa, and the two new models should reach our shores sometime in 2021 - after the Ghibi Hybrid arrives in late 2020.

But these two Trofeo sedans, according to Maserati, will be the fastest standard production on-road cars from the Italian automaker yet and will scorch through the speedometer onto a 326km/h top speed. And the source of power? A turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine.

New V8

Those who are aware of the Levante Trofeo, will know that the bulky SUV's engine is a new unit used by Maserati. Displacing 3799cc and placed at a 90-degree V-arrangement, it produces a very impressive 580 horsepower, which translates to 432kW - 432.5kW, if you want to be pedantic. Thanks to turbocharging, the torque figure of 730Nm is available from 2250rpm up to 5250rpm. True, the full thrust does kick in at a slightly higher engine revolution than some of its rivals, but we'll reserve verdict on engine performance after a driving impression.

However, given that the engine has been developed in cooperation with Ferrari, we'd like to believe that this engine will deliver in spades when it comes to performance.

Maserati says that 0-100km/h will be cleared in 4.3 seconds for the Ghibli Trofeo, and 4.5sec for the Quattroporte Trofeo. Both cars will have the same top speed, as alluded to earlier, and power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

To give each car its own driving traits, the Ghibli Trofeo features a rear limited-slip self-locking mechanical differential, whereas the Quattroporte Trofeo only has a self-locking diff. The suspension of each car also sees a raft of improvements over their 'lesser' siblings.

Fresh interiors

Both sedans also boast fresh new interiors, with several details hinting at their sporty intent. Both cabins also feature unique styling cues that can only be found on Trofeo models, which include a new central clock with its exclusive graphics and the 'Trofeo' name embroidered into the headrests.

The multimedia system has also been revised and, for the 2021 model year, a new 10.1-inch high-resolution display replaces the previous 8.4-inch unit. The new screen features touch-function and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Multiple Bluetooth devices can be connected, and the home screen can be tailored to personal preferences.

Maserati says: "The new multimedia platform is entirely connected to the world of services comprising Apple Store, Personal Account, Life Navigation Services, Remote Diagnostic Control, E-call, Alexa in Vehicle Voice Assistant and over the air updates."

Maserati will offer its new family of Trofeo models with the option of one of two sound systems: Harman Kardon Premium Sound System (four woofers, four tweeters, one centre fill, and one sub with amplifier, giving a total of 650W). Or, as an alternative, the Bowers&Wilkins High Premium Sound System (15 speakers totalling 1280W).

The South African launch of the Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo will be announced in due course.
