Here's how much you'll pay for Renault's new Kadjar in SA

Cape Town - Renault expands its local SUV offering with the launch of its latest model in South Africa - the new Kadjar. The Kadjar expands Renault’s presence in crossover segment and follows the launch of its Captur sibling in May 2015.

The Kadjar takes over from the Koleos as Renault's top SUV and shares a platform with its alliance partner Nissan's Qashqai and X-Trail. The new model will take on the likes of Toyota's Rav4 and Ford Kuga as well as the Korean  duo - Kia Sportage and Hyundai's Tucson.

According to Renault: "The new Renault Kadjar SUV Crossover is the embodiment of the brand’s entire DNA and set to make its mark on one of South Africa’s most hotly contested vehicle categories."

Wheels24's Janine van der Post is attending the local launch of the Kadjar in Cape Town. Lookout for here driving impressions later this week.

New crossover range

The Kadjar line-up comprises three derivatives all powered by forced-induction turbo engines. At the top end of the range is the turbo-diesel Dynamique 1.6 dCi 4x4 (96kW/320Nm) followed by the 1.2 turbo petrol-powered Dynamique (96kW/205Nm) and entry-level Expression variants.

Fuel consumption for the petrol powered Expression and Dynamique units is 5.7 - 5.8 litres/100km respectively with emissions of 127g/km and 131g/km. The diesel unit has a claimed consumption of 5.4 litres/100km.

Standard across the Kadjar range, ECO mode function is available at the push of a button and electronically modifies the engine’s response to automatically lower fuel consumption (by up to -12%).

New 4x4 mode

The new 4x4-i Four Wheel Drive offers three modes:

2WD - Power is only transferred to the front wheels to optimise fuel consumption under normal driving conditions; or when driving in towns and cities.

Auto - The transmission ratio between each front and rear wheel adapts to ensure optimal traction and safety and also automatically corrects the torque distribution.

Lock - On uneven surfaces such as soil, sand, mud and snow, 50/50 distribution between the front and rear wheels is maintained up to 40km/h; Anti-Spin Regulation (ASR) is disconnected.

The ASR controls wheel spin and engine torque and automatically distributes up to 50% of the torque to the rear wheels. Combined with the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ASR can control each wheel independently.
