In June 2020, Lexus revealed the first images of its upcoming LC 500 Convertible. Based on the LC 500 Coupé, the new car retains the essence of what made the Coupé such a looker; without foregoing any of sexiness and beauty.

Chief designer, Tadao Mori, explains: "Few convertibles are stylish and elegant when the roof is open and when it is closed. We put maximum effort into realising the same beautiful roofline for the LC Convertible as for the coupe."

Critical aspect

There was, however, one crucial aspect Lexus' engineers had to adhere to: make the LC 500 Convertible the most beautiful open-top car it can be. On the face of it, they achieved this goal and does it seem as if the car is elegance in motion. But the aesthetics are only one part of the car.

Under the bonnet sits a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine that produces 351kW and 540Nm, all of which are sent to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. By our estimation, it should allow the car to go from 0-100km/h in under five seconds and onto a top speed of more than 250km/h.

That would place the car in a very selected company of open-toppers – GT cruisers that stand out for all the right reasons. While two of rivals below retail for over R4.0- and R6.0-million, respectively, the Lexus will come in as an affordable alternative not afraid of stepping on proverbial toes.

Here are four rivals the Lexus LC 500 will face when it arrives in South Africa next year.
