BMW unleashes latest X5 M and X6 M Competition models

Can you believe BMW is already launching its third generation of the X5 M and X6 M, for 2020 there are also even more powerful 'Competition' versions added to the range. 

The SUVs are powered by the familar 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 441kW and 750Nm in 'normal' form and 460kW in 'Competition' specification. 

The high-revving engine sees outputs raised by 18kW and 37kW (Competition models) over its predecessors.

Highlights include a sports exhaust system and power is channeled through an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

The four-wheel drive system is rear-biased according to BMW and can be adjusted in normal to four-wheel drive Sport mode. The xDrive system teams up with Active M Differential for better traction and driving dynamics says BMW.

In terms of acceleration from 0 to 100km/h, the automaker quotes times of 3.9 seconds / 3.8 seconds (X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition) – up to 0.4 seconds faster than predecessors.

Standard specification includes Live Cockpit Professional with navigation system and Intelligent Personal Assistant, and the Parking Assistant. There are also a large selection of driver assistance systems and the laserlight available as options.

The duo have been tested at the Miramas and Arjeplog testing facilities and the famous Nürburgring-Nordschleife and make their show debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2019.

They will then be launched together from April 2020. 

In terms of design the models feature 21-inch wheels at the front and 22-inch at the rear as standard for Competition models, while optional for the X5 M and X6 M. 

The front is dominated by large air intakes, a kidney grille with double bars, M gills on the front side panels, roof/rear spoiler, a rear apron with diffuser elements and a exhaust system with two sets of twin tailpipes.

Competition models are differentiated by standalone design elements. BMW Individual special paint finish available for BMW X models for the first time.There's a head-up display with M-specific readouts fitted as standard and M multifunction seats and BMW Individual fine-grain Merino full leather trim also standard.

There are two individually composed modes that can be selected using M buttons on the steering wheel. The 'M Mode' allows driver assistance system interventions, instrument cluster displays and head-up display readouts to be configured individually. Choice of road and sport settings, plus track in the Competition models.
