At a Volkswagen Media Conference held at the Festival of Motoring on August 21, South Africa’s leading passenger car manufacturer presented five incredible vehicles.
Vivo Dune concept car
The first vehicle to make its debut at the Media Conference was a locally-inspired concept car named, Vivo Dune.
The vehicle is inspired by South Africa’s diverse landscapes, specifically the beautiful but also dry and harsh mountainous regions such as the Great Karoo and the Kalahari Desert.
This defined the Vivo Dune’s exterior colour and trim for the vehicle, as well as how the vehicle was built.

The Vivo Dune concept car is a rugged off-road model and distinguishes itself through a host of new exterior features like customised paint, roof carrier with integrated LED light bar and accessories, painted roof, snorkel on the A-post on the left hand side, front underbody cover, LED headlights, off-road tyres and side styling bars with decals.
At the rear, the shark-fin antenna, tailgate spoiler, spare wheel on a carrier, chrome exhaust tail pipe and mud flaps add to the rugged look of the Vivo Dune.
Interior design highlights include dash trim inserts in customized colour, accent stitching, off-road navigation, customised trim panels multi-function steering wheel, two-way radio and sport pedals. The seats in ‘Sun City‘ Orange leather with ‘Dune‘ embroidery add to the appeal of the car.
The Vivo Dune concept car was hand built by Volkswagen’s Product Engineering team under the leadership of Dr Joost Kessels.
The Vivo Dune concept car is purely a concept car and will not go on sale, it will be housed at Volkswagen’s AutoPavilion museum in Uitenhage. Certain elements of the Vivo Dune are being investigated for production in the near future.
ID.R
The fully electric Volkswagen ID.R which generates 500kW and 650Nm metres of torque, accelerates faster than a Formula 1 car.

The ID.R is Volkswagen’s first electric race car and the technical forerunner to a new generation of electric production models.
Since its world premiere in April 2018, the ID.R has gone to set prestigious records. This ground-breaking vehicle made history by breaking records at Pikes Peak, Nürburgring-Nordschliefe and more recently at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Hill Climb.
T-Cross
The all-new T-Cross, which will join the Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg in the model range in South Africa from September, is a practical, cool and versatile addition to Volkswagen’s fast-growing SUV range.

It has a carefully balanced combination of casual style, refined practicality and extreme cost-effectiveness. The T-Cross will soon be captivating hearts in the South African market with its combination of style, practicality, flexibility, connectivity and fuel economy.
The T-Cross will launch in South Africa in September with a 85kW TSI engine. The 70kW TSI model range starting from below R300 000 will be available in the first quarter of 2020.
Golf GTI TCR
The limited edition Golf GTI TCR features a distinct and bold design, class-leading technology as well sports car credentials; the 213kW GTI TCR reaches the 100 km/h mark in just 5.6 seconds.

The Golf GTI TCR, was derived from the racing car of the same name – the two-time overall winner of the international TCR racing series.
The fastest Golf GTI ever made will retail in South Africa in the first quarter of 2020 and only 300 units will be available in the country. Specifications of the local model as well as pricing will be announced towards the latter part of the year.
Amarok Canyon
The powerful 165kW 3.0 TDI V6 bakkie is now available with a special edition model, the Amarok Canyon.
The Amarok Canyon is set apart with its refreshed look and sees new features as well as additional exterior and interior styling elements.
The Amarok Canyon joins the Dark Label (only available in the 2.0 BiTDI 132kW 4MOTION Auto) as the only other special edition model available in the range and distinguishes itself through‚ the ‘Honey Orange‘ metallic exterior paint (exclusive to the Amarok Canyon), door handles in matte black, radiator grille painted in black with chrome trims, partly chrome-plated body coloured exterior mirror housings, widening wheels arches painted in black, new design matte black styling bar, matte black side tubes with unique Canyon decals as well as 17" Aragua alloy wheels.
Interior features of the special edition include Canyon edition partial leather seats with 'Honey Orange' coloured stitching, seatbelts with orange-coloured seams, multi-function steering wheel with colour seams, Greenhouse black roof lining, 'Canyon' embroided floor mats, pedal cap in stainless steel and auto dimming interior mirror.
The Amarok Canyon will be available for order from September 2019 and retails for R799 000.
