The Toyota Corolla sedan makes its return to the South African market and is feature-packed with the latest technologies the automaker has to offer.
Glenn Crompton, vice president of marketing at Toyota SA, says: “Like its hatched sibling, this new-generation sedan is built on the latest TNGA platform. “It is a marked step up from its predecessor with a powerful and efficient new drivetrain, a sharper design language, crisp handling and superb ride comfort, as well as a long list of driver-assistance safety niceties never before seen on Corolla.”
The new Corolla sedan is equipped with a raft of driver-assistance safety features and a multimedia system that’s compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Two trim levels will be on offer. The top-of-the-range XR model is powered by a 2.0-litre engine, while the XS model makes do with a 1.8-litre engine. Both engine options are petrol-powered and no diesel models are added to the range.

Corolla XR sedan
The XR model’s engine is mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox, or a ’10-speed’ continuously variable transmission (CVT). The naturally-aspirated engine delivers 125kW and 200Nm, and Toyota claims a fuel return of 6.0-litre/100km for the CVT and 6.5-litre/100km for the manual.
The XR models come standard with smart entry, bi-LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, partial leather upholstery, steering wheel mounted paddle shifters for CVT models, and Toyota’s Safety System which includes pre-crash activation, blind spot monitor, adaptive all-speed cruise control and lane departure alert.
Corolla XS sedan
Available solely with the CVT, the Corolla XS sedan is a wholly specified despite being the entry-level model to the range. Standard features include LED headlights, keyless start, cruise control, reverse camera, and is fitted with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also boasts seven airbags, electronic parking brake, and hill assist control. To mention a few.
On the engine front, the 1.8-litre engine is good for 104kW.
