VW unveils 373kW Golf GTI

Volkswagen Golf fans must be tickled pink. The automaker has revealed a unique, supercar GTI version.

And either the German brand has gone bonkers or this GTI has sneaked into a steroids lab. The one-of-a-kind Golf GTI has a three-litre engine under the bonnet pushing out 373kW, does zero to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds and costs the equivalent of R56-million.

Golf Design Vision GTI GALLERY

The Golf Design Vision GTI, as it is known, shares only one part with the ordinary GTI and that’s the windscreen. Everything else is customised. According to VW, it’s shorter, lower and wider with 20” alloy rims and 15” brakes.

Head honchos at VW said there are no plans to put this beast of a car into production but it could borrow some design cues to the next generation of Golfs.

Klaus Bischoff, who headed up the team behind the Vision GTI, said: “The design team's brief was to give a spectacular glance into the future of the GTI.”

TopGear.com has described the car as "a design study reflecting some of Volkswagen's greatest hits".

In a roadtest report, Wheels24's sister TV programme said: “The GTI concept will do 0-100km in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 300km/h. Not just fast for a Golf, but fast full stop.

“We were under strict rules not to use full throttle but after some heavy pleading, full throttle was briefly applied, and oh, our, God! The GTI just explodes in a hail of noise and more noise.”
