VW reveals 375kW GTI Roadster concept

CARINTHIA, Austria - Volkswagen reveals its new GTI Roadster concept, based on its Gran Turismo 6-exclusive virtual car, at the 2014 Worthersee meeting in Austria.

The GTI Roadster was originally created as a virtual car featuring in the Sony PlayStation 3 classic - Gran Turismo 6 (GT6).  The GTI Roadster is the work of three young VW designers, winners of an in-house competition to design a vehicle to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo series.

The GTI Roadster is inspired by the 2013 Worthersee car, the Design Vision GTI, though with a more extreme design.

The GTI Roadster measures 1.9m tall, 1.8m wide, 4.1m long and weighs 1420kg. Its 2.4m wheelbase is 137mm shorter than that of the production Golf GTI and the Design Vision GTI.

V6-POWERED ROADSTER

The concept is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo TSI engine capable of 375kW/560Nm mated to a seven-speed DSG gearbox and 4Motion four-wheel drive. It’s V6 propels the GTI Roadster to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds wit a top speed of 305km/h.

It’s equipped with ceramic brakes nestled behind 8.5 J x 20" wheels with 235/35 tyres at the front and 9.5 J x 20" wheels with 275/30 tyres at the rear.

Designers Malte Hammerbeck, Domen Rucigaj and Guillermo Mignot were not constrained by limitations of traditional production models (i.e feasibility and price). Their design was chosen by Volkswagen’s head of design, Klaus Bischoff, and Sony’s Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of the Gran Turismo series.

While there are no plans for production, players of GT6 will be able to download the virtual GTI Roadster from mid-June 2014.
