VW Golf 7: SA launch details

The order book for the next generation Volkwagen Golf 7 has opened in certain European countries - and we have a few local details ahead of the popular hatchback's arrival in South Africa in February, 2013.

Lighter, more spacious, more efficient and more advanced, VW claims, than the model it replaces, the new Golf is now available to order in the UK ahead of its official on-sale date of January 7, 2013.

NEW TURBOCHARGED ENGINE

The engine range for the latest version of Volkswagen’s best-seller includes 1.2 and 1.4 TSI petrol engines with varying engine outputs and 1.6 and two-litre TDI turbodiesel engines. Five and six-speed manual transmissions and six and seven-speed DSG units will also be offered.

All engines will have stop/start technology and battery recharging and GTI and BlueMotion models will join the line-up from 2013, the automaker said.

In South Africa, the Golf 7 will be available for order from January 2013 ahead of its market launch in February 2013.

The engine line-up – comprising 1.4 TSI and 1.6 and two-litre TDI engines – will remain largely unchanged, although the current 75kW 1.6-litre petrol will be replaced by the 77kW 1.2 TSI recently introduced in SA in the new Beetle.

The Golf 7 will be available in a number of trim levels with features including a touchscreen media system with Bluetooth and iPod or MP3 connectivity, a City Emergency Braking function, PreCrash preventative occupant protection that prepares the cabin ahead of a crash and an electronic differential lock.

Options (in the UK) include high beam assist, lane assist, park assist, adaptive chassis control, a rear-view camera, a navigation system with eight-inch colour touchscreen and keyless entry.
