Toyota have announced a specification upgrade for the Land Cruiser Prado range centered primarily around comfort and convenience features.

Practically a junior Land Cruiser, the Prado range sells around 100 units per month. Despite not offering a common-rail diesel option, it's build quality and off-road ability has continued to endear it to the South African public.

To ensure Prado remains selling in a highly competitive market segment, Toyota have introduced audio visual navigation as a standard feature across the three model range.

Equipped with a comprehensive South African map set and presented within a split screen display which can be controlled both via the console or satellite buttons on the steering wheel, it is sure to be a boon when vacationing in those out of the way rural areas.

New convenience features include a centre console mounted cooler box, to keep refreshments cool when traversing the Kalahari. Entertainment features now include a the 6-disc CD-changer system with MP3/WMA compatibility.

For the rest is still good old Prado with a Torsen type limited slip centre differential - with lock facility - providing for excellent traction in the toughest off-road conditions through the full time four wheel drive system.

Additionally Active Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control provide assistance in slippery conditions both on and off-road. The VX models also feature Downhill Assist Control and Hill-start Assist Control in first gear and reverse to further enhance the vehicle's capabilities in difficult driving conditions.

Aesthetically the range still rides on 17-inch mags and now features limited cosmetic changes applied to the front of the vehicle with revised grille and headlight styling.

Powertrains remain as they were with the 3.0-litre diesel models having 96 kW @ 3600 r/min and 343 Nm @ 2000 available. Drive is through a 5-speed manual transmission on the GX model and a 4-speed automatic transmission on the VX model.

The 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine produces 179 kW @ 5200 r/min and 376 Nm @ 3800 r/min. This model is fitted with a 5-speed automatic transmission.
