LONDON, England - Toyota has extended its Auris line-up with the launch of the Touring Sports - including a hybrid model.
Toyota SA said the Touring Sports won’t be heading this way yet, even though there are right-hand drive models available. “It’s currently not on the cards for the local market as the Verso fills that gap and on a bigger scale, there’s the Innova. Should market conditions change and there’s a big enough demand for the car, we’ll reconsider."
The British-built Auris Touring Sports sees the hybrid battery located beneath the rear seats so boot space is not compromised. The new model is expected to help increase the European segment share to more than five per cent during its first year of sales by 2014.
The car will only be built by Toyota UK on the same lines as the Auris hatchback and Avensis models.
PRACTICAL AND SPACIOUS
The Touring Sports has the same 2600mm wheelbase and 10.4m turning circle as the hatchback, but is 285mm longer catering for the extra load space of 530 litres. With the rear seats folded flat, the space increases to 1658 litres.
The wagon offers a one-touch easy-flat folding rear seat system, a dual-level boot floor and two-way tonneau cover on Icon, Sport and Excel models. There’s also a roller-type luggage net, shopping bag hooks, aluminium roof rails and a 12V power outlet in the boot for adventurous drivers.
The wagon shares the same front-end design as the hatchback, with emphasis on width and a low stance. It also features the lower grille and narrower upper grille. The steep windscreen flowing into the extended roofline with aluminium roof rails looks more pronounced and it also has an integrated rear spoiler.
According to Toyota, some Auris Touring Sports models will be available with a Skyview glass roof.
The rear will see a 100mm lower loadspace with a new bumper and tailgate design, along with a ‘floating’ chrome-finished spoiler.
PERFORMANCE
The UK market will have the same engine line-up as the hatch: 1.3 Dual VVT-i and 1.6 valvematic petrol units; 1.4 D-4D diesel and a full hybrid.
The full hybrid’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system features a 1.8 VVT-i petrol engine and an electric motor, giving a maximum power output of 100kW. This enables 0-100km/h in 10.9sec and a top speed of 180km/h.
CO2 emissions come in at 86g/km on the hybrid (well below the tax limit), 127 and 139g/km on the 1.3 and 1.6 models respectively and 109g/km on the 1.4 diesel.
