The three additions to the Opel commercial vehicle range are: The Opel Combo with a 520kg payload capability, the Opel Vivaro with a 1140kg payload, and the Opel Movano with a carrying capacity of 1580 to 1620kg depending on model.

A total of seven variants within the three-model range caters for a wide range of customer requirements. All three are placed in segments of the light commercial market that are currently experiencing rapid growth.

Opel Combo

This baby in the new Opel commercial van line up offers a combination of comfort, driveability, manoeuvrability, and practical load carrying capability. The monocab design offers generous cab space and headroom.

Twin rear doors and sliding left hand side door combine with a low floor level, just 550mm, for ease of loading and unloading.

Research indicates that a large number of vehicles in the Opel Combo class are owner-driven. The interior comfort and safety features of the Combo are tailored around offering a practical yet comfortable driving environment.

Interior trim materials are to passenger vehicle standard and active and passive safety features reflect this standard as well.

Electric power steering provides for effortless driving. Height adjustment for the steering wheel as well as excellent seat travel is available to ensure a comfortable driving position.

No compromise on safety

Side impact beams are fitted to the driver and passenger doors and the renowned Opel Pedal Release System that assists in limiting foot and lower leg injuries in the event of an accident is a standard fitment.

A full size driver airbag is provided as are seat belts with pre-tensioners and force limiters. As with all current Opel Corsa models, the Combo suspension is designed around the Opel DSA (Dynamic Safety Action) chassis technology.

A transponder-key type immobiliser system provides a high level of theft protection.

The load area has a volume of 2,4 m cubed. Six cargo anchor points are provided on the cargo area floor and a rigid plastic liner, custom fitted to the Combo, is available as an accessory.

This provides protection for both the floor and lower body sides. Also on the accessory list is a steel lattice restraint that divides the cab and load areas to provide protection form shifting cargo.

A nylon cargo restraint net is also available as an accessory.

For those who have a need to tow a trailer a custom tow bar is available. Maximum towing weight allowed is 1000kg with a braked trailer and 450kg with an unbraked trailer.

Power for the Combo comes from the latest generation Opel 1.4 litre Twinport engine. This produces 66 kW at 5 600 r/min with maximum torque of 125 Nm at 4 000 r/min.

Excellent economy (tests conducted by Opel show an urban cycle consumption of just 8 litres/100 km) and sprightly performance are features of the Combo derived from this excellent engine.

    Opel Vivaro

The ergonomics of the cab are excellent providing comfortable seating for a crew of two with occasional seating for a third occupant. Key to this is the 'joystick' type gearshift integrated into the dashboard. This provides legroom for the third front seat and a convenient walk through facility from one side of the vehicle to the other.

Telescopic adjustment for the steering column and ample fore and aft movement provide for a comfortable driving position for even the tallest of drivers.

A driver's side airbag provides an added level of protection from serious injury in the event of a crash impact.

    Get a load of this

While operator comfort is important, the main role of the Opel Vivaro is that of a delivery vehicle, hence a load area packed with functionality is a feature of this vehicle.

Access is through two large sliding side doors, wide enough to accommodate a euro pallet, and two rear doors that open with detents at 90 and 180 degrees. Door locks and seals are recessed and shielded for protection.

The load area is isolated from the cab by a mesh partition in the base model, or a steel bulkhead (with window) in the higher opulence version.

The load area is one of the lowest and widest in this class of vehicle and has a flat floor with minimum intrusion for the wheel arches. Five cubic metres of load space are available.

Tie down points on the floor are provided and the Opel Flexcargo system provides added flexibility in securing loads to the side panels. A cargo net is available as an accessory.

Power comes from a choice of either a 2.0 litre petrol engine or a 1.9 litre common rail turbo diesel engine. Both are mated to a six-speed transmission.

    The petrol engine develops 88kW at 4 750 r/min with peak torque of 190 Nm at 3750 r/min. The diesel unit produces 74 kW at 3 500 r/min with 240 Nm of torque at 2 000 r/min.

Tests conducted by Opel show an urban cycle fuel consumption of 12.8 litres/100 km for the petrol variant and 9.3 litres/100 km for the diesel. With a 90-litre fuel tank capacity, this equates to less frequent stops at the petrol pump.

The Opel Vivaro is available in two specification levels. The high spec option adds windows to the side and rear doors and a steel cabin bulkhead.

A radio/cassette combination is available as a factory-fitted option on the high specification variants.

The Opel Movano, the largest of the three new commercials from Opel, joins the Combo and Vivaro in meeting this design requirement.

    Opel Movano

Big on style and load carrying capacity the Movano tops off the Opel commercial vehicle range with a choice of long wheelbase (LWB) and extra long wheelbase (XLWB) models with payloads of 1 621 kg and 1 579 kg respectively.

The spacious cab of the Movaro provides a comfortable commercial vehicle working environment with generous leg, head, and shoulder room.

Numerous storage areas are provided for documentation and the general paraphernalia that goes hand in hand with commercial vehicle operation.

A low entry height of just 430 mm provides for easy access to the cab.

Remote central door locking, with a deadlock feature, and a transponder immobiliser system provide vehicle security.

As with the other models in this commercial vehicle range, the Opel Movano comes with numerous safety features as standard.

Wheels are 16 inches in diameter and are fitted with 205/75R16 tyres. Disc brakes are fitted front and rear and are controlled through an ABS anti-lock system that incorporates EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) and brake assist.

Large twin lens side mirrors provide excellent rear vision. A safety cell type cab area rounds of the safety package.

As a load carrier the Opel Movano excels with its space-efficient transverse engine, front wheel drive layout. Up to 12.6 m cubed (XLWB model) is available with a roof height of 1.91 metres.

The rear doors open to an ultra wide 270 degrees and provide access to a flat load area with the minimum intrusion from the rear wheel arches.

The left hand side sliding door provides a 1.1 metre wide and 1.8 metre high side access to the load area. Both the side and rear doors provide ample access to easily load standard Euro palettes with a forklift.

A fitted cargo liner is available as an optional extra to protect the floor and lower body area.

Power comes from a latest generation Opel CDTI diesel engine with a capacity of 2.5 litres. Maximum power is 84 kW at 3 500 r/min and peak torque is 290 Nm at 1 600 r/min.
