Sub-6/100 Audi Sportbacks headed to SA

  • Next A7 Sportback for the UK by end 2014
  • LED headlights standard, better infotainment
  • Revised engines and new transmissions
  • Sub six-litres/100km fuel consumption

LONDON, England - A new 60mpg (5.8 litres/100km) Audi V6 TDI Ultra is just one of the highlights of the next generation of Audi A7 Sportbacks due at the end of 2014.

Others will be refreshed with new engines, new transmissions, new head and tail lights and upgraded infotainment systems.

The coming incarnation of the five-door that looks like a coupe but, Audi says, has the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of an estate, will start deliveries in the UK in the last quarter of 2014. South Africa can expect them early in 2015.

STRIKING CHANGES

Back in 2010,  when the A7 Sportback had its debut, Audi says, it was setting standards in automotive design. "Its long bonnet, flowing C pillars and raked rear created a dynamic overall impression which has been amplified further in the this next version with a number of styling revisions."

The most striking changes, Audi says, are to the single-frame grille which adopts the latest hexagonal corporate design; the bumpers have been "re-sculpted" and the tail pipes made wider with trapezoidal openings.

Light-emitting diode headlights will work with the A7 Sportback’s familiar LED daytime running lights; optionally, Matrix LED headlights can be specified. The latter, Audi says, form a beam with an LED matrix which provides optimal illumination by dimming specific individual diodes to divert their light around oncoming and following traffic without reducing their intensity in other areas.

Dynamic indicators with a sweeping function in the direction of the turn are also standard at the rear (optional for the front) lights.

The body of the new Audi A7 Sportback is primarily aluminium and high-tech steel. Audi says": "It is extraordinarily light and designed for maximum comfort in terms of noise. The boot has a base volume of 535 litres, expanding to 1390 litres with the rear seats folded."

The cabin, Audi says, is "sleek sophistication" dominated by a horizontal line around the driver and passenger. "The facia gives an impression of lightness and elegance enhanced by new interior materials, including aluminium/walnut inlays."

Leather is standard, even better leather option.

The front seats (four choices) can be optionally equipped with ventilation and massage. The standard audio system can be supplemented with a head-up array on the windscreen.

From launch, the next A7 Sportback will offer two petrol and three diesel engines ranging in power from 163 to 250kW. Audi says: "Many aspects of the 204kW TDI 'clean diesel' are new but it is the 163kW “ultra” version of the V6 that can make 5.8 litres/100km."

Top-of-the-range engine is a four-litre TFSI capable of 337kW with cylinders-on-demand technology; eight-speed gearboxes are available, along with all-wheel drive for engines above 200kW.

The chassis, too, combines great precision with relaxed comfort. The new Audi A7 Sportback features wheels with diameters ranging from 18 to 21". Some engine configurations are equipped with new lightweight brakes and the power-steering system will feature an electromechanical drive for high efficiency.

Audi drive select dynamic handling system will standard - at least in the UK - with optional dynamic steering, two sports suspension options and adaptive air suspension - a harder set-up in the S7 Sportback.
