Special Smart 'a sporty statement'

STUTTGART, Germany - The new Smart ForTwo ‘Edition Citybeam’, Mercedes says, makes "a sporty statement with body panels in metallic or matte paint, tridion safety cell in silver and three-spoked spoked alloy rims with low-profile tyres.

The cabin has exclusive black leather seats with grey fabric inserts in the backrest and grey stitching and, in Europe at least, orders will be taken from January 15, 2014 at prices (again, in Europe) starting at the equivalent of R211 000.

The special model is available as a coupé or a cabrio and will reach dealers in April 2014. Customers can choose a combustion engine or an electric motor.

FAT REAR TYRES

The car had its premiere at the Brussels auto show on January 10 2014 as an individual model from Smart with a distinctive character "at attractive prices".

The most striking exterior features are the body panels, available in light blue, silver metallic or matte anthracite, depending on market and customer preferences. The silver safety cell and the three double-spoked 15" rims shod with 175/55 radials (front) and fatter 195/50 radials at the rear).

"Sporty elegance," Mercedes says, "defines the Citybeam's cabin." The instrument panel is also finished in leather with grey stitching, the steering-wheel is three-spoked and carries gearshift paddles, and passengers' feet are cushioned by mats embroidered with the Edition lettering.

The limited model is based on the Passion equipment line: that means a soft-touch automatic gear programme, power windows, auto aircon and a transparent roof with a sunblind.

The Smart For Two Edition Citybeam is powered by a one-litre (52kW/190Nm) normal petrol engine, a one-litre (62kW/225Nm) turbo engine or a 55kW electric drive (which in Europe, involves battery rental at the Euro equivalent of R900 a month.
