SRT Hellcat Charges in on M5, E63

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan - BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63, Audi RS6... We're living in a great age of super German-made sedans.

Across the Atlantic however, Dodge has flexed its claws with its Charger SRT (Street Racing Technology) Hellcat, a muscle car they say is the fastest and powerful saloon in the world.

The SRT Hellcat gives German sports cars pause for concern with its supercharged 6.2 litre HEMI V8 capable of producing 527kW/880Nm mated to a eight-speed auto (modified from the 300C and Jeep SRT8.

'CAT CORNERED IN A DARK ALLEY'

Dodge is vague on its 0-100km/h figure but claims its hellcat and reach a top speed of 325km/h and 0-160km/h in 13 seconds.

There are three driving modes (street, sport and track) which alter the characteristics of the Hellcat from fast to "a cat cornered in a dark alley".

In terms of design, its two massive exhausts dominate the rear, while the front is gleaned with sleek LEDs. The front airdam paints gives its a menacing look and its gaping airdam on the bonnet channels cool air to the engine and supercharger.

To fully unleash the Hellcat's 527kW, a second key fob, finished in a red hue, is needed as the "normal" black fob limits power. We can only assume most owners will leave the black key at home.

HELLCAT CHALLENGER

Talk show host and petrol head Jay Leno has a superb garage which he showcases on his YouTube channel, Jay Leno's Garage. Check out how Leno makes his SRT Hellcar scream.

Sadly, since these muscle cars are in left-hand drive only, they won't make their way to our shores.

However, here's some American muscle you can order in SA...
