SNEAK PEEK: Golf GTI for SA

In February 2013, Volkswagen's seventh-generation Golf arrived in South Africa. VW not only sets the bar for premium hatches but raises it with each generation of its Golf.

No sooner had the new model arrived on our shores before petrol heads began asking: “When will the GTI arrive?”

The seventh-generation Golf GTI will arrive on our shores on Thursday, June 11 2013. Wheels24 editor LES STEPHENSON will attend the launch, so check back with us for our full report and driving impressions.

Ahead of the official launch, we thought we’d get petrol heads salivating with key details on the upcoming hot hatch.

HOT HATCH SNEAK PEEK

The new GTI stays true to the concept model shown in 2012 with its traditional red brake callipers, twin chromed tail pipes and sport suspension.

The model is powered by a 2.0 turbocharged engine delivering 162kW/350Nm. The turbocharged engine is created from the third generation of VW’s EA888 engine series.

The  GTI is equipped with a stop/start system and the engine is mated to a six-speed transmission. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.0 litres/100km with emissions of 139g/km.

Equipped with a six-speed direct shift transmission (DSG), fuel consumption increases to 6.4 litres/100km with an emissions rating of 148g/km CO2.

The 2.0 engine enables the model to rocket from 0- 100km/h in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 246km/h (DSG: 244km/h).

The model will be launched in three colours (red, black and white) with 18” alloy wheels fitted to 225/45 tyres.

INSIDE

Inside the model benefits from leather sport seats, steering wheel (shift pedals for the DS ) and stitching. As befits its hot hatch status, the instrument cluster has unique graphic display, red ambience lighting as well as stainless steel door sill guards and pedals.

Standard kit includes progressive steering, fatigue detection system, automatic multi-collision braking and electronic differential.

Optional features are dynamic chassis control with driver profile selection. Drivers can order an optional 400 watt Dynaudio sound system.
