SA-bound chic 108 revealed

Peugeot is replacing its now-dated 107 with a chic new city car - launch at the March 2014 Geneva auto show - the 108. It'll be in South Africa a few months later.

The minicar is 3.47m long, 1.62m wide, weighs 840kg and will be available as a hatch or convertible with various badges: it will be cross-cloned with the new Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo - as were the previous models nine years ago.

The 108 will have its world premiere at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show on March 4 with its SA launch set for later in 2014.

SIX TRIM LEVELS

As ever, local prices and specifications to be revealed closer to the launch date but this will be the range of four three-cylinder petrol models:

1.0 e-VTi 50kW (88g/km CO2) Five-speed manual
1.0 VTi 50kW (95g/km) Five-speed manual
1.0 VTi 50kW (97g/km) Five speed auto
1.2 VTi 62kW engine (99g/km) Five-speed manual

The Peugeot 108 offers a choice of six trim levels and seven themes.

Inside it has a 17cm touchscreen, auto aircon, power front windows, reversing camera, keyless entry and start as well as hill assist. Boot space is 196 litres (180 litres with a spare wheel) and luggage capacity has grown to 750 litres with the seats folded.

Users can connect their smartphones via Bluetooth to the “Mirror Screen” for applications that are compatible with use in a vehicle. The screen operates using Peugeot’s MirrorLink technology for mobile devices running on Android, RIM and Windows, and by AppInCar for devices using iOs.

Safety features include six airbags, anti-lock brakes, electric brake pressure distribution, emergency brake pressure, electronic stability control, IsoFix child-seat mounts.
