  • New budget Mirage hatchback for SA
  • Set to take on A-segment
  • 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng - Mitsubishi will launch a new hatchback in South Africa in early August 2014 - the Mirage.

Thefive-door, revealed at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show, is powered by a 1.2, three-cylinder MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control) petrol engine driving a five-speed manual gearbox.

'FUN A LITTLE CAR'

Fuel consumption is rated at 4.9 litres/100km; the Mirage, according to Mitsubishi, is "the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid petrol car available in the US", a market where it is also reportedly seen as the lightest five-door, five-passenger, vehicle.

In SA it should have keyless entry, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-fluid distribution, two air bags and Mitsubishi's RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) impact-absorbing chassis.

Mitsubishi SA's general manager Wynand Pretorius said: "With the new Mirage the brand will be entering the segment for the first time in South Africa - and with a fun little car at that. We exhibited the new Mirage at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show where it received extremely positive responses from show-goers.

"In this vein, we are taking a very strong approach on the viability of the Mirage as an entry-level vehicle, specifically targeting a market where price, fuel-efficiency and ownership costs play determining roles in the buying process."

The Mirage will be delivered with a three-year or 100 000km warranty.

Full range details and pricing will be announced at launch (to which Wheels24 is invited). We'll confirm the prices then.
