R99 900 for new Fiat Punto

Okay, so it’s a marketing gimmick, but it’s a good one. Fiat Auto SA is bringing its new entry level Punto 1.2 Active into the market beneath the critical R100 000-mark.

The local company has been doing a lot of fixing and mending at the bottom end of its price bracket recently and it is no surprise that Fiat Auto SA has revealed a new Punto 1.2 Active to contest the budget-friendly hatchback segment.

Slotting beneath the 1.4 Emotion, the two Punto models will together champion Fiat’s small hatchback cause until the all-new Punto Evo arrives in South Africa later this year. An evolution of the Grande Punto, the Evo will be “noticeably more upmarket in terms of styling, spec and performance”, Fiat Auto SA said.

However, for now the Punto Active 1.2 fulfils the role of a practical hatchback and comes standard with power steering, air conditioning and electric front windows.

Power is provided by an eight-valve 1.2-litre Fire engine producing 49 kW at 6 000 r/min and 96 Nm at 2 500 r/min.

The Punto 1.2 Active is being introduced at R99 900, whereafter the price at new will be R106 900.

The new Punto comes with a three-year/100 000 warranty and Fiat’s free roadside assistance for a year.
