Boasting common-rail direct injection, the turbodcharged 3-litre diesel V6 produces 150kW and 440Nm of torque, and drives the rear wheel through a five speed automatic transmission. The 2.2-litre, four cylinder turbodiesel soldiers on with 110kW and 330Nm too.
Staying true to it's van origins the Viano employs a traditional McPherson strut front axle. The load-bearing subframe with a light-weight sheet steel construction absorbs the wheel location forces through the wishbones.
The subframe also boasts effective deformation properties, aiding energy absorption in an accident. Linked directly to the suspension strut and attached to the subframe is a torsion bar stabiliser.
The rear axle with steel suspension has the extra comfort of an electric self-levelling suspension. The usual list of safety dynamic safety acronyms - ESP, ABS, ASR, AAS, BAS and electronic brake force distribution (EBV) - are fitted as standard.
Viano can be locked and unlocked by remote control in the same way as the tailgate. A new feature allows the sliding door and tailgate to be locked and unlocked independently of the front doors. Electrical operation of the sliding doors is offered as standard on the V6.
The tailgate has an opening angle of about 90 degrees and is fitted on both sides with dual gas-filled struts, which serve as limiters for the opening angle and aid the closing process.
The Viano boasts a high level of standard equipment, with tinted glass all round, power windows at the front, power vent windows at the rear, steering column with adjustment for reach and height, driver and front-passenger airbags, central locking with radio remote control and attachment points for roof-mounted carrier systems.
