Peugeot adds 308 estate to SA range

accreditation

The versatile Peugeot 308 SW has arrived, with a single derivative offering masses of space and safety for up to seven occupants.

Sharing a platform with the 308 hatchback, the cars are mechanically identical although the SW's wheelbase is 100 mm longer than that of the hatchback and the rear overhang adds 124 mm.

Furthermore, the aluminium bonnet, front fenders and windscreen are shared with the hatchback, but the station wagon's rear doors are unique and the body structure has been extensively redesigned too.

Luggage space varies from 508 dm3 to 1 736 dm3 and for greater practicality, the boot space is equipped with a removable torch, retaining nets and an elastic strap to keep items upright.

Petrol 1.6-litre only

A single model powered by a 16-valve 1.6-litre petrol engine with variable valve timing is being made available.

The normally aspirated engine is familiar to the 308 range and delivers 88 kW and 160 Nm. Peugeot claims a combined fuel consumption of 7.1 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 169 g/km.

Inside its cabin, the 308 SW is identical to the hatchback and is fitted with standard kit ranging from dual zone climate control with separate rear vents, cruise control, a trip computer, fingertip controls for the audio system and auto headlamps and wipers to a refrigerated cubby, and electric windows.

Glass roof

Following on from its 307 SW predecessor, the latest model also boasts a glass roof although, at 1 588 mm long, this is or 300 mm longer than the 307's.

The roof is assembled from three layers of tinted glass, which according to Peugeot won't compromise safety, while an electrically-controlled sunblind with a one-touch open/close function keeps the sun out.

Designed to accomodate people and their things, passengers in the second row get a folding tray table and Peugeot claims the rearmost seats can accomodate passengers up to 1.7 m tall.

Also, while the front passenger seat folds forward, the second row's seats are removeable, slide over a distance of 90 mm, recline, fold flat and tilt forward.

Despite this seating ballet, Peugeot is confident the SW will meet the hatchback's standards when it is subjected to EuroNCAP testing. The hatchback achieved five stars for adult protection, four stars for child protection and three in the pedestrian impact test.
