Petrol power for VW's Amarok

Volkswagen’s Amarok double-cab range, launched some months ago in SA as a then diesel-only line-up, is now available with a TSI petrol engine.

The introduction of the 118kW engine completes a line-up that includes 90kW 2.0 TDI and 120kW bi-turbo diesel derivatives.

As with its turbodiesel siblings the TSI, has a six-speed manual transmission. An eight-speed auto is planned for the third quarter of 2012.

The quad-valve, four-cylinder TSI uses variable valve timing and a variable vane geometry turbo to produce 118kW from 3800 to 5500 rpm, while its peak torque of 300Nm is on call from 1600 to 3750rpm.

Volkswagen claims its petrol double-cab accelerates to 100km/h in less than 10 seconds and has a top speed of 180km/h. Fuel consumption is given as 9.6 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 228g/km are quoted.

All Amarok double-cabs are sold with a three-year or 100 000km warranty and a five-year or 90 000km service plan. Services are recommended at 15 000km intervals.
