• Grand Slam performance model
• 1.4-litre turbo can make 200km/h
• Brakes from previous Corsa VXR
LONDON, England - Opel expands its Adam range with its hottest version yet, the Grand Slam. The new performance variant benefits from a new turbo engine and style tweaks.
Compared to the standard Adam, it gains a new bumpers, sill mouldings, extended rear bumper, chromed exhaust, rear tinted windows, spoiler and LEDs. It’s available with a choice of ten colours, four roof colour combinations and sports what Opel refers to as a Red 'n Roll theme, demonstrated by its signature roof.
NEW TURBO ENGINE
It’s powered by a 112kW/220Nm 1.4 four-cylinder turbo EcoTec unit mated to a six-speed manual. This turbo engine propels the Grand Slam to 100km/h in 8.5sec on to 200km/h but fuel consumption is listed as 4.9 litres/100km with CO2 emissions of 139g/km.
The Grand Slam’s braking system, derived from the previous generation Corsa VXR, uses red brake callipers with 308mm ventilated discs front and 264mm discs rear. It has 18” alloy rims with propeller-design rims fitted under 225/35 R 18 tyres.
SPORTY INTERIOR
The interior reflects its Red 'n Roll theme with a red leather steering wheel, gear shifter and handbrake, new trim on the instrument panel, grey/black/red key design and red stitching on the door panels. It has special mats, aluminium-capped sports pedals and sills with Opel lettering.
The Grand Slam has cruise control, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, tyre-pressure monitor and six air bags. A multi-colour LED lighting package allows drivers to select from eight ambient colours.
Available as an option is the automaker’s IntelliLink system compatible with smartphones and tablets using either Android and Apple iOS. It provides USB, aux and Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, seven speakers and a 17cm high-definition colour touch-screen.
We asked Opel if/when the car might reach South Africa and this is what we were told: "We will consider it when it becomes available for South Africa. However, we have no timing on any additional Adam models."
