DETROIT, Michigan - Jeep's fourth-generation Cherokee will debut at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show after, says its maker Jeep, "evolving into a completely new vehicle delivering a fresh interpretation of the ‘Go Anywhere, Do Anything’ attitude of this legendary American brand".

The new Cherokee, based on the brand's "compact US wide" platform, will be the first mid-size SUV to have a standard nine-speed auto. The new 'box, as well as a six-speed manual, will be powered by a new two-litre turbodiesel engine with MultiJet II technology.

The two-litre diesel produces 126kW/350Nm with the nine-speed auto, 104kW/350Nm in manual guise. Fuel economy will be helped by an engine stop/start system. The Cherokee will be available in either two-wheel drive or one of two new all-wheel drive offerings.

NEW FOG-LIGHTS

Jeep's designers were tasked to to create a vehicle that remained true to the brand while moving it into a new era so a key element at the front is the “waterfall” bonnet. The iconic seven-slot grille remains but there are new new LEDs with optional xenon headlights (standard on Limited spec).

The sides features signature Jeep trapezoidal wheel arches, the rear Cherokee-specific fog-lights. A new version of Jeep's CommandView dual-pane power sunroof is available as an option on all trim levels and extends from the windscreen to the rear.

Jeep designers took inspiration from the brand’s heritage for the Cherokee’s all-new interior. The signature trapezoidal plan view feature line is classic Jeep, echoing the trapezoidal wheel arches. The centre-stack bezel is inspired by the outline of the grille on the 1940's Willys Jeep and continues the design language of its larger sibling, the Grand Cherokee.

Premium materials are used throughout the cabin. Exclusive features include a heatable and leather-wrapped steering wheel and a wireless charging pad.

LOSE THE REAR AXLE

The new Jeep Cherokee takes the legendary Jeep 4x4 capability to the next level with all the advantages of an all-weather, all-terrain vehicle. There are two innovative 4x4 systems: single-speed auto Jeep Active Drive I and two-speed Jeep Active Drive II.

The new Jeep Cherokee is also the first mid-size SUV to feature rear-axle disconnect, resulting in reduced energy loss when 4x4 isn’t needed and lower fuel consumption. The rear-axle seamlessly switches from two- to four-wheel drive for full-time torque management without requiring input from the driver.

Jeep Active Drive I, available on the Cherokee Longitude and Limited, has a single power transfer unit (PTU) which operates the all-wheel drive. The Cherokee Limited (for launch later in 2014) uses Jeep Active Drive II which has a two-speed PTU with torque management and low-range. The 4-Low mode locks the front and rear drive for low speed power or towing.

The gear reduction enables enhanced climbing ability as well as outstanding crawl ratios for severe off-road conditions.

SEVEN AIRBAGS

Jeep Active Drive II works with the Selec-Terrain system which has four modes (five for the Trailhawk model, which adds Rock mode to Auto, Snow, Sport and Sand/Mud).

The new Cherokee is equipped with seven airbags (driver, passenger, curtain, window and driver'sknee), electronic stability control with rollover mitigation as well as anti-lock brakes with off-road calibration.

To ensure maximum protection, the complete offering of safety features available or optional on the new Jeep Cherokee includes new systems such as the forward collision warning-plus, Parksense parallel/perpendicular parking assistance, adaptive cruise control-plus, lane departure warning-plus, blind spot monitoring and rear cross path detection.

Drivers receive information via an 18cm reconfigurable colour instrument cluster. The new Jeep Cherokee also offers the advanced UConnect system with a 21cm touchscreen available on all trim levels.
