Next from Chev: Race-tuned Sonic

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Chevrolet will showcase several concept variants of its Spark, Sonic and Cruze models at the upcoming SEMA show in Las Vegas, USA.

The automaker, the Detroit News reports, will show its "The Color Run" and a "Pink Out" Spark, the latter an inspirational vehicle in aid of the American Cancer Society, as well as a race-car concept Sonic B-Spec.

Campbell said a competition kit would help buyers to convert a Sonic into a race-tuned vehicle and it was expected to go on sale in 2013 at Chevrolet Performance retailers in the US. The, the DetNews adds, costs the equivalent of R25 000.

More than 60 000 buyers attended the show in 2011.

Z-SPEC MODELS

In 2012, Chevrolet says, its focus will be on its popular compact vehicles and customising options for buyers. According to the DetNews, 50% of the vehicles at SEMA 2012 will be small or compact vehicles.

Jim Campbell, General Motors vice-president of performance vehicles and motorsports, said: "SEMA is a special event for all of us who love performance."

Chevrolet will show several Z-Spec variants of its Sonic and Spark in new colours and sporting upgrades such as new wheels and grilles. Certain models can be equipped with rear spoilers, lowered ride heights and other styling enhancements.

UPSCALE CRUZE

The Z-Spec parts are available through US Chevy dealers, who also can install them and add the cost to buyers' monthly payments though the parts could be added during original build as limited-edition models in future runs.

GM also will use SEMA to test buyers' appetites for an upscale Cruze, the DetNews said. The concept Cruze has a metallic exterior and a brown leather-trimmed interior. Other additions include fascia extensions, tinted head and fog lights, tinted windows and custom black aluminum rims.

The 2012 SEMA show will run from October 30 to November 2.
