Next XE: Most fuel-efficient Jag yet?

  • New aluminium structure
  • 3.1-litres/100km on EU combined cycle*
  • New modular architecture
  • Aluminium alloy invented - RC5754

LONDON, England - The Jaguar XE is designed on the automaker’s modular vehicle architecture and will be the only vehicle in its class, the automaker claims, to use an aluminium monocoque. The use of lightweight aluminium accounts for 75% of its structure.

Lightweight construction is a core element of Jaguar’s DNA as its XJ, XK and F-Type have been developed using bonded and riveted aluminium structures.

The XE, Jaguar claims, will be the automaker’s most fuel-efficient vehicle yet with consumption rated at over 75mpg (3.1-litres/100km) and less than 100g/km.

‘EXCEEDS OTHER IN CLASS’

Jaguar’s Chief Technical Specialist, Dr Mark White, said: “The Jaguar XE body uses over 75% aluminium content, which far exceeds any other car in its class. This gives us a body structure with unrivalled low weight: it’s light but also immensely strong with extremely high levels of torsional stiffness.

“We’ve made sure our aluminium-intensive body structure exceeds all global safety standards without compromising on vehicle design or refinement.”

The XE is the first vehicle to make use of a new grade of high-strength aluminium called RC 5754, developed specifically for the new model. This new alloy features a high level of recycled material and makes a significant contribution to Jaguar’s goal of using 75% recycled materials by 2020.

Designed and engineered in the UK, the XE will be the first Jaguar to be manufactured at a new purpose-built production facility at the company’s Solihull plant in the West Midlands, England.

The world premiere of the new Jaguar XE will be held in London on September 8 2014. It's expected in South Africa in late 2015.
