PRETORIA, Gauteng - Mazda SA has introduced a CX-5 facelift model with, the automaker says, advanced technology, better functionality and a more refined cabin and shell.

The first CX-5 arrived in 2012. In October 2014 another two engines joined the range. Now there's the facelift CX-5 with cosmetic updates that include a new grille.

On the Individual and Akera models are new diode headlights and gunmetal 19" alloy wheel rims - the intention being "to create a more premium design expression".

The MZD Connect infotainment system is a simple system for internet radio-streaming and social networking, considered by Mazda to be part of the enhancement across the model range.

Also new is an electronic parking brake. Satnav is standard on the Individual and Akera models, optional on Active and Dynamic.

Mazda's MD David Hughes said: "Our new models have proved popular. The updated CX-5 reflects our latest technology and the new line-up has responded to the needs of an even wider range of customers."

The CX-5 is the first Mazda in South Africa to adopt, on Individual and Akera models, adaptive LED headlights which have a no-glare light-emitting diode array for high beam. A windscreen camera detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles or tail lights of vehicles ahead and turns off only the light block shining on the other vehicles.

This all makes it possible to drive with high beams on at all times.

It also has wide-distribution low-beams to help illuminate each side of the vehicle to detect pedestrians and other obstacles at intersections at night.

The two-litre four-cylinder petrol delivers 121kW/210Nm, with fuel consumption rated at 6.4 litres/100km. The 2.5 petrol is capable of 141kW/256Nm and uses 7.4 litres/100km.

The 2.2 litre four-cylinder diesel is available in 110kW/380Nm or 129kW/420Nm guise, each consuming 5.7 litres/100km.

The CX-5 is equipped with lane-departure warning (Individual and Akera trim) which comes to life at more than 65km/h and help to nudge the car back where it belongs.

It has six air bags (front, side and curtain),  dynamic stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, and emergency brake assist.
