Mercedes-Benz's flagship S-Class luxury sedan rolls round for a mid-life facelift.
On the outside, the flagship's appearance has been spruced up. A new grille, front bumper and chrome strip have been added to the nose. Bi-xenon headlamps and LED driving lights are standard although an LED package is also offered.
At the rear, the S-Class's tail lights have also received some attention and a new design is evident, particularly with the inserts that were previously body-coloured.
Inside the sumptuous cabin, the S-Class also has a variety of infotainment and luxury options to choose from, ranging from a Splitview display, to a Comand system with a 40 Gb hard drive and the latest Linguatronic voice command functions and a rear-seat entertainment package.
For the interior, prospective owners have a variety of wood and leather trim options to choose from.
Power matters
The S-Class range is offered with one diesel engine and five petrol units with six-, eight- and twelve cylinder configurations.
Mercedes-Benz claims that tweaks to the steering and fuel pumps and the 7G Tronic transmission have seen fuel consumption and CO2 emissions drop off "significantly".
However, with the inclusion of two performance models in the form of the 386 kW S63 AMG (using the 6.2-litre V8 unit) and the 450 kW S65 AMG (powered by the 12-cylinder 6.0-litre motor) it will be interesting to see how the range's consumption fares in real-world conditions.

Being a technological tour de force means this S is again packed with a brace of "intelligent" driver assistance and safety programmes.
These include the standard Adaptive Highbeam Assist that recognises oncoming vehicles and adjusts the S-Class's headlamps, Night View Assist Plus with an infrared camera that now recognises pedestrians and highlights them on the display, and Attention Asisst that detects drowsy drivers.
All S-Classes come standard with a MobiloDrive 120 (six-year/120 000 km) maintenance plan and a two-year full vehicle warranty.
