Land Rover has added a cheaper XS model with coil-spring suspension to the Discovery 4 line-up specifically for adventurous drivers.
The XS is about R112 000 cheaper than the next S model, largely because air-suspension and its "terrain response system" which allows the car to be set for, say, "snow" or "gravel" on other models, has been omitted.
Why? Probably so that you can do some real off-roading instead of letting the car do all the work.
The XS houses Land Rover’s 155kW three-litre turbodiesel V6 and is intended to broaden the appeal of the Discovery 4 with competitive pricing. It’s also mated to the automaker’s acclaimed eight-speed transmission with Drive Select and rotary shifter, hill-descent control and low/high-range gear selection.
MADE TO WORK
Land Rover SA’s Peter Biven said the vehicle was essentially created as an expedition unit "for robust, overland work". The Disco 4 is known for its extravagant luxury features but this one has been stripped of niceties deemed unnecessary for serious off-roading - among them the sun roof and the power seat adjustment.
The XS also loses include 18” rims, auto aircon, cruise control, gear-change paddles, five-seat configuration and a chilled centre cubby. It does have tow hitch and a trailer stability assist driver function. The only options available for the XS are privacy glass and leather upholstery.
LIMITED OPTIONS
Biven added: “This is a tough, hard-working vehicle that delivers unbeatable utility in demanding territory.
“We are excited about the XS introduction. It's a more affordable option in the Discovery line-up and caters to a market with very demanding requirements.”
All Discovery 4 models are delivered with a five-year or 100 000km maintenance plan.
