New Auris breaks Toyota mould

Toyota has revealed its striking new Corolla hatchback as it makes its market debut in Japan.

The hatchback, which will still bear the Auris name in South Africa, will be available here from “the first quarter in 2013” a Toyota SA representative said.

And in a departure for Toyota, the latest Auris, which has been the subject of much research and evaluation in Europe, will be released ahead of the Corolla sedan.

Its European development has also had a positive influence on the Auris’ styling. The new model’s design in edgier than before with sweeping lines adding to the athletic styling. The hatchback also has a lower centre of gravity that will have a positive effect on its dynamic performance.

Apart from its sportier styling, the new Auris will, according to Toyota, also offer clever packaging solutions that will free up cabin space for occupants.

Not many details have been released, but the line-up will include a 1.8-litre petrol engine and a hybrid version.

The Toyota SA representative said options were still being considered ahead of the model’s local introduction in 2013. “There are several derivatives, including a hybrid, so we’ll need to decide if we want to launch with one or two options, or the full range,” he added.

The next Corolla sedan is expected to debut from 2014.
