Audi has evolved its R8 supercar line-up into three engine choices and a new gearbox for SA.
The range now includes a V8 Coupe and Spyder, as well as the flagship R8 V10 plus Coupe pushing out a mean 404kW. All models use the seven-speed S tronic gearbox and feature new LED headlight technology.
The R8 was launched in South Africa in 2007 with only the V8 Coupe; the V10 in 2009 and Sypder arrived in 2010 and there are now 255 units on local roads.
MORE OPTIONS
The engine in the V8 Coupe and Spyder makes 316kW and 430Nm of torque and goes from zero to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 300km/h. The V10 Coupe makes 386kW and 530Nm and has a 3.6 second zero-100km/h dash time and has a top speed of 314 km/h, while the Spyder completes the same in 3.8 seconds.
The range-topper V10 plus makes a yummy 404kW and 540Nm has a top speed of 317km/h.
The facelifted model is still made from the aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF) which only weighs 210kg, giving the V10 a total weight of 1570kg. The top of the range V10 plus is 50kg lighter.
NEW LOOKS
While the car is still very much an R8 in terms of styling, tweaks include the single-frame grille with the corners painted black and chromed inserts on the V10 struts. There’s a redesigned front bumper with air inlets bearing three crossbars each, LED headlights and a large round tailpipe.
The rear lights feature new LED technology which makes the lights move in a swiping motion in the direction which the driver wants to turn.
Of course there are lots of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) bits, including the sideblades, mirror housings, enlarged front spoiler and the diffuser.
NO NEED TO STOP
The updated R8 Spyder gets the same treatment as the Coupe, although the lid on the soft top compartment and the sides are also draped in carbon. The soft-top roof opens and closes electro-hydraulically in 19 seconds, and you don’t have to stop the car to make it function. The roof can be operated while driving up to 50km/h.
Inside the new R8 badge is on the steering wheel, gearshift lever, door sill trims, instrument cluster and on the start screen of the on-board monitor.
Electrically adjustable sports seats are standard on the V8 and V10 engine versions with bucket seats standard on the V10 plus.
Standard equipment on the new range include: MMI Navigation Plus, Bluetooth, 19” alloy rims, LED headlights, tail lights with “swipe” LED indicators, music interface, parking system and a Bang & Olufsen sound system (V10 only).
The Audi R8 is available to order at selected dealers. Pricing includes a five-year or 100 000km freeway plan, service and maintenance plans.
