Longing for a Jazz, but need a boot? This is the new Honda City. It shares the new Jazz platform and drivetrain with shrunken Civic styling. Unfortunately its not likely to come to SA.

Honda’s City hatch has morphed into a small sedan, offering an alternative for Jazz owners who’d like a boot.

The compact sedan is a radical departure from the previous generation car, with a totally new exterior style, featuring a few styling elements borrowed from the latest Accord. It shares a platform with the new Jazz too.

Mechanically the latest City is powered by a 1.4-litre i-VTEC engine shared with the new Jazz.

Power is rated at 73kW and though the 0-100km/h sprint time (11.8 seconds) is hardly F1 starting grid position stuff; you can be assured of very frugal fuel consumption figures.

Buyer will have the option of either manual or automatic transmissions, with the five-speed manual now featuring carbon synchromesh for smoother changes. The automatic transmission is a six-speed i-SHIFT automated manual – featuring steering wheel mounted paddle shift controls.

The reduction of noise, vibration and harshness levels were a key design imperative and to this end engine and suspension mountings have been redesigned.

Due to go on sale in ‘selected’ European markets by January, City is to be shown at the Istanbul motor show in October.  Its low market entry point positioning lends credence to rumours of it being bound exclusively for newer entrants to the European Union.

Though unlikely to come to South Africa it would make the perfect foil for entry level family motoring in partnership with the new Jazz. And it's a much better car than the German 'City' badged ranged on sale locally...
