The 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show is just a few days away at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec with automakers pulling out all the stops with latest models and awesome stands.

The show will open with two news media days (October 16/17) before the doors open to the public on Friday October 18.

ON THE MENU

Renault is promising to mix a bit of Dakar Rally with Mad Max and The Terminator. The French automaker says this unique concept would materialise with a world debut in the Expo Centre in the form of the Duster Détour.

The Detour is a joint venture between Renault Design Central Europe and a South African design studio. The concept will take the looks of the recently launched Duster one step further, particularly with its striking Pearl Yellow/Matt Grey colour.

General Motors will showcase the latest models from Chevrolet, Opel and Isuzu. The company said it would bring a high performance sports car along with a new sports hatchback that will be launched early in 2014. The details of that model are still a secret and it will only be revealed on the first day of the show ensuring that everyone remains in suspense.

The updated Chevrolet Cruze hatchback will be on show and will go on sale soon in SA. The Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV also gets a mild makeover and be displayed ahead of its launch in 2014.

Opel will be showing its new Astra sedan and Corsa OPC Nurburgring Edition while the latest generation Isuzu KB bakkie will be put through its paces on the 4x4 track at the Expo Centre.

Toyota has one of the biggest stands with at least 18 cars on display. Marketing communications GM Kerry Roodt said: “We have produced a stand of great stylistic and architectural appeal with origami-inspired, wave design elements predominating.”

Motorsport fans will be heading to see the amazing TS030 Hybrid driven by Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Stéphane Sarrazin which finished second at the 2013 24-hour Le Mans race. The Toyota Hilux driven by Dakar Rally legend Giniel de Villiers will also be a must-see.

DROPTOP SENSATION

Toyota SA is also promising a number of global concept vehicles but is keen to keep the suspense going until the minute the covers come off. The automaker has announced that the Toyota 86 Open Concept (a convertible) will be at the show. This version of the popular 86 sports coupe was shown at the 2013 Geneva auto show.

Lexus will display a blisteringly quick and equally beautiful LFA sports car.

Visitors to the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show are in for one of the most spectacular shows yet and with so many concept cars and new models heading to this international show from around the world, it promises to be true motoring extravaganza.
