The 2011 Johannesburg International Motor show opened to the news media today, October 6, but for sure we aren't going to have time to play with the toys and watch the shows that the general public will be able to savour from Thursday.

Wheels24 will, however, bring you the vehicle launches as they happen over the two media days - October 6/7 - complete with images and links to supporting stories. There will be one about every half-hour on each day - so keep Wheels24's special JIMS section open on your laptop, desktop or mobile!

SPECTACULAR EVENTS

The first launch this morning (Oct 6) will involve General Motors' products then through the day there will be events from Nissan SA, Mercedes-Benz SA, Smart, VW SA, Audi SA, Ford, Mazda, Lexus, Toyota, Honda SA, Land Rover, Jaguar, Kia Motors SA, Hyundai Automotive, BMW SA, Mini, Chana and, the last event of the day, Geely SA.

Friday will see launches from Renault, Mitsubishi, McLaren, Fiat, Daihatsu, Subaru, Alfa Romeo, Chery, Tata, FAW, Volvo, Peugeot, Citroen, MG and, finally, Suzuki.

For the public, from Saturday, there will be all sorts of value-for-money offerings at the show at the Expo Centre, Nasrec, until October 16, boosted substantially by several exciting forms of motorised entertainment that can be watched for no no charge other than the entrance fee to the grounds.

There will be two spectacular motorcycle events – one involves a mountain bike - and the other two-wheeled action will be mixed in with drifting cars – as well as a third show, featuring precision car-driving.

WORLD CHAMPS IN ACTION

Two famous international riders will be involved in a unique challenge – Kenny Belaey of Belgium will ride his mountain bike against Julien Dupont of France and his GasGas trials motorcycle. Belaey (28) is a nine-times World mountain-bike trials champion; Dupont (31) is a World extreme moto trials champion.

The protagonists will tackle the same or similar obstacles so it will be a straight fight between muscle power and machine power! They will take part in two shows daily on October 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16. The venue will be near the motorcycle and scooter display on Terrace 2.

Jim McFarlane, of XS Promotions, has come up with an awesome Top Gear-type repertoire involving powerful Chevrolet cars and motorcycles. This promises to be a highly memorable and dramatic show which will involve 14 people.

Among the motorcycle stunt riders will be the famous Le Riche brothers who between them have won nine SA trials titles as well as being multiple winners on the tough US circuit where they finished second and fourth in the championship.

PRECISION DRIVING

Jim McFarlane doesn't want to let too much out of the bag at this stage but he gives the assurance the show, called the Atomic Junkies Theatre, will certainly be action-packed and adrenalin-charged.

This show will take place on the drifting track at 11am and 3pm on each Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In addition the Yokohama Driving Dynamics team will be putting on displays in four Opel Corsa OPCs. They, too, will have morning and afternoon displays on the Saturdays and Sundays during the show.
