VW says it is writing a new chapter of a global success storyIn its presentation of the new Golf Cabriolet at upcoming the 2011 Geneva auto show . The four-seater has an innovative soft top with an electro-hydraulic drive that opens the Golf’s top in only 9.5 seconds.

"The new VW’s styling follows that of its hard-top, three-door counterpart," the automaker says, "but shows a high level of independence with a new rear section, lower roof and more swept-back windscreen. It's even more dynamic when ordered with bi-xenon headlights."

The rear lights are LED's, same as those on the GTI.

Standard safety features include an automatic rollover bar, front crash bags, side head/thorax bags, a knee bag for the driver and ESP.

The new Golf claims to be one of the quietest convertibles.

SIX ENGINES

"Its soothing quietness is attributable to the new soft top that was optimised in specific ways," VW coos. "It also has a standard hydraulic drive that lifts and drops the top very quickly - 9.5sec - at road speeds of up to 30 km/h.

Six turbocharged, direct-injection engines ranging in power from 77 to 155kW will be available in Europe. Four of the petrol engines (TSI) and one diesel (TDI) are available with a dual-clutch gearbox; three with energy-saving BlueMotion technology.

HOT TOP: Only 9.5sec from open to shut - or the other way around.

"Just how efficiently the new Golf Cabriolet handles fuel is illustrated," VW says, "by the 77kW 1.6 TDI with BlueMotion Technology – it's rated at only 4.4 litres/100km (CO2 117g/km)."

The cars are on sale now in Germany with prices starting at 23.625 euros. Essentially, all the features offered in the classic hard-top Golf are also available in the Cabriolet.

In a rare flash of Bavarian humour, VW points out that the only feature not available is a sunroof...
