The new car has been developed by the Italian car maker's in-house tuning division, Abarth, and it was shown, complete in motor sport livery, at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Officially called the Rally Super 2000, the car will get four-wheel-drive machine and around 210 kW for competition - but a road-going version will be made available, although the racing livery, large alloys and rear spoiler are unlikely to appear on customer cars.

A Fiat spokesman at Frankfurt revealed that the road Abarth will probably be powered by a 157 kW engine, as opposed to the 89 kW and 97 kW motors initially available when the Grande Punto is launched next year.

Abarth models will cost around R24 000 more than the 1.9-litre Multijet version.
