Opel's fresh take on 'mom's taxi'

accreditation
The versatile Opel Zafira is being revised for 2008 and recently revealed its facelift at the Bologna Motor Show.

The seven-seater now has an even bolder face and adds some interesting design details.

Its interior is said to be more refined with chromed surrounds for the climate and radion controls along with new trim on the instrument panel and doors.

Zafira's Flex7 seating system remains unchanged and allows for easy reconfigurations within the cabin without having to remove seats.

A new engine range has been earmarked for the revised MPV, including a new 1.6-litre petrol engine and two 1.7-litre CDTI turbodiesel engines.

The new 1.6 ECOTEC is an 85-kW 16-valve unit that replaces the existing 77 kW engine. It consumes 7l/100 km, a saving of 4.3 % over its predecessor, Opel claims.

Replacing the 1.9 CDTI motor, the new 1.7 CDTI engines with 81 kW and 92 kW both feature common-rail injection, four-valve technology with swirl control and a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter.

With increased torque of 20 and 40 Nm respectively, the 1.7 CDTI units provide noticeably more power while consumption and emissions are reduced. Both turbodiesel units require 5.7 liters of fuel per 100 km and emit just 152 g CO2 per km.

Other highlights include the improved trailer stability control system which monitors the yawing motions of the car and trailer.

The facelifted Zafira is expected to arrive in South Africa in 2008.
