Volvo has acted swiftly after photos of its new flagship station wagon, the V70, surfaced on the internet. The Swedish carmaker has now released the first official info and photos of this classy estate.

The all-new Volvo V70 is of course bigger and even more luxurious than before while also offering even better safety credentials.

The newcomer is instantly recognisable as a Volvo station wagon, however, the V70 has a more dynamic and sculpted shape than its predecessors ditching the classic boxy shape.

Volvo promises that the V70 is roomier than before with increased passenger space.

Furthermore it boasts a number of smart features too enhancing its versatility.

For example the rear seat's 40/20/40 split makes it quite flexible while a sliding floor in the cargo area makes it easier to slide heavy loads in and out.

There is also a storage compartment under the luggage area floor that locks when the tailgate shuts. The tailgate is also electrically-operated.

Volvo says that the V70 comes with numerous safety enhancements. As the V70 is aimed at family car buyer the V70 offers improved child safety features as well as a new airbag system.

Furthermore the side structure is stronger while the crumple zones are made from different grades of steel.

Volvo also promises better protection for other road users too.

Other safety gizmos include radar sensors at the front which apparently can spot a forthcoming collision - it will activate the brakes to minimise the impact.

Another interesting (and unusual) feature is a heartbeat monitor which can be triggered from 100 metres away. It will pick up if there is an unwelcome passenger inside the car.
