Whereas Ferrari is showing off a green 599 hybrid to please environmentalists at the Geneva motor show, Lamborghini’s green Gallardo Superleggera is sure to melt ice caps at rapid speed.

You might wonder what exactly was wrong with the previous Gallardo Superleggera. Well, Lamborghini isn’t telling – all it wants you to know is that the new LP570-4 Superleggera is lighter, faster and greener.

If Shrek wanted a clubsport roadracer with Italian heritage, this would be it...

And you though the bits carbon trim on your hot hatch's fascia was cool. This is the Superleggera 570-4's door, from the inside...

Carbon-fibre everywhere

The new Gallardo Superleggera’ styling is predictably mad. The front bumper has been radically (even for a Lamborghini) remoulded, whilst side windows are now plastic, instead of glass.

To further this weight saving regime the aft diffuser, spoiler, side sills and plenty of under-body bits are hewn from carbon-fibre. There are lashings of F1’s favourite construction material in the cabin too, trimming out the door panels, transmission tunnel cover and seat shells.

Tallied up, the weight saving equates to around 70kg, ensuring the new Gallardo is a fit 1 340kg. Unfortunately, this also means that if somebody in a stock LP570-4 pulls up solo next to you at the traffic lights, and you have a passenger onboard, it’s pretty much a dead heat…

Emissions are down by 20% - like we care. Acceleration from 0-100km/h improves by about three tenths of a second - awesome.

A little quicker - really

To differentiate the LP570-4 Superleggera from its lesser sibblings, it boasts direct injection. This bumps the Gallardo’s LP570-4 Superleggera's power output up by seven units from 412- to 419kW.

Set those Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres upon a high-fiction surface and Lamborghini says the new Superleggera will see off the 0-100km/h benchmark in 3.4 seconds and power all the way to 325km/h.

Potential owners wishing to customise their Superleggera LP570s will have the option of carbon-ceramic brakes, contrasting coloured callipers, a manual three-pedal transmission (nice), rear-view camera (practical), SatNav (superfluous) and LED illumination for the cabin and engine bay.

You just have to tick the manual transmission and LED embedded engine bay option, really...
